Personal Life & Career

Christopher is Velentium’s Principal Security Architect, overseeing the company’s Cybersecurity division. He graduated from California State University Northridge with a B.S. in Computer Science. Since then, Christopher has worked for over 40 years developing medical devices. He has a wife, two sons, one daughter, four grandchildren, and a Siberian Husky. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, biking, and enjoying craft beer, preferably in the company of his wife and their loyal companion.

Early in his childhood, Christopher became his elementary school’s bike monitor, which gave him the opportunity to pick and open combination and tumbler locks – he had no idea how much of a precursor this would be for his professional career!

Christopher acknowledges that while “hacking” into systems and devices is a fun hobby due to the challenge, it is far more difficult to prevent an outside source from obtaining unapproved entry or information. This has led him to participate in regulatory and standard bodies to better define tools, techniques, and processes for the medical device industry to enable the creation of secure products. He has worked with several industry-leading device manufacturers, as well as the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), MITRE, Bluetooth special interest groups, and IEEE, in order to present, define, and codify techniques to control embedded cybersecurity.

Christopher describes himself as a prophet who evangelizes the benefits of a secure development lifecycle, not only to increase a device’s security, but also to ease the burden of the developer and ensure the high-quality outcome of the product itself.

Why Velentium?

In 2016, Christopher was working alongside Velentium for a mutual client. During their collaboration, the skills and values of the people Christopher was working with moved him so much that he closed his own consultancy in Southern California and joined Velentium at their corporate headquarters in Katy, TX.

Of the three core values, the one that most resonates with Christopher is Honorable (“we do Right for Right’s sake”). In a world where most companies are only motivated by financial interest, Velentium routinely has moral discussions about the best approach for its clients, world, and employees. Every employee engages each project with the mindset that we are designing medical equipment for our loved ones.

This motivation became a reality for Christopher when his first grandchild was born prematurely, which did not allow his lungs to fully close. He was rushed to the NICU for treatment and during one of Christopher’s visits, Christopher noticed that a handful of the machines allowing his grandson to breath, including a high frequency ventilator, had been designed by Christopher himself.

Looking Ahead

Christopher aspires for Velentium to be a leader in medical device cybersecurity. He wants the company to be the first thought for any medical device developer as the go-to partner for implementing, designing, assisting, and supporting the process of securing a medical device.

The FDA, Health and Human Services, and regulatory bodies in the EU are all becoming stricter and more prescriptive in response to several recent vast public breaches affecting patient health and information. He believes this pressure and regulation will only increase as years go by.
